On this day we have the opportunity to venerate and acknowledge the power of the Cross. If possible, seek out a parish that offers the blessing of the Holy Cross to strengthen you in times of difficulty.
O God, who willed to hallow the standard of the life-giving cross by the Precious Blood of your only-begotten Son, grant, we beseech you, that they who rejoice in honoring the same holy cross may rejoice also in your ever-present protection. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
We preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.
This is a song often sung during the Lenten Season and in preparation for Good Friday. It could be a great opportunity for you and your family to reflect on the song and lyrics in light of this solemn day. This feast day also is the forerunner to this seasons Ember Days where we spend time in prayer, fasting and almsgiving. During this season the days are offered for the grape harvest in thanksgiving for the Precious Blood.
Some ideas about celebrating this feast day at home include venerating the cross, eating a basil-filled meal, and having an age-appropriate discussion about the crucifixion with your children.
