Dear St. Mary Families,
Our culture often presents leadership as being the person in charge. Christ gives us a very different model.
Christian leadership begins with service.
A true leader is willing to take responsibility, sacrifice for others, speak truth with charity, and use his or her gifts for the good of the community. Leadership is not primarily about recognition. It is about learning to ask, “What is needed of me?”
This week, our seventh graders begin their Leadership Retreat at Damascus. My hope is that experiences like this help our students understand that leadership is not something reserved for a title or position.
Every child is already being formed to influence others through the way he or she speaks, acts, serves, includes, encourages, and responds when something difficult is required.
At St. Mary, we want our students to become young men and women who are willing to lead because they are first willing to serve.
That is the pattern Christ gives us.
